Still Life with Her Recipes
Still Life with Her Recipes

Still Life with Her Recipes, 1997-9
(oil/handmade paper, cold wax: 8' x 23')

In this installation, I pay tribute to the experience of two women who, during their internment in Nazi concentration camps, independently wrote recipe books for the food that they had prepared in their homes before the war. In the face of physical starvation, their memories of food became a source of spiritual nourishment. The act of recording these recipes was a means of recovering their connection to the lives they had lost: their culture, their families and the sense of their own humanity.
